D Day Memorial

While in Virginia, we visited the D Day Memorial in Benton, Va. It was very moving. You could almost feel the fear, pride, chaos, and heroism that must have been on that beach in 1944. It is a must see.

This is one of the sculptures. It is meant to represent the valor, sacrifice, and accomplishment of the troops that day.

This is a map of D Day. (That's Eisenhower's head on the bottom.) The map was made of little 1/2 inch tiles. Very Cool.

They had a small sample of the beach. In the water, little jets would spray water into the air to simulate rifle fire and grenades.

There was a large open circle behind the beach simulation. One one side were the names of all the dead from the other 9 countries that participated in D Day. The flags represent the country that plaques soldiers were from.

This is a reproduction of the garden that was outside Eisenhower's office. He used a home as his base in.... England? Oops. My horrible geography skills are showing.

This is the opposite side of the circle in one of the previous pictures. This entire side is composed of the names of the American soldiers that lost their lives.

Great pictures. I had never heard of either of these memorials. Very interesting. The D Day one really did an awesome job of depicting what a sacrifice it was to so many. I am so glad you had a great vacation.
